Beat the Heat: Stay Safe and Hydrated this Summer
As South Africa braces for its hottest summer on record, it’s essential to take proactive steps to protect yourself and your loved ones from the scorching heat.
The hotter days ahead increase the risk of dehydration, especially for vulnerable groups such as the elderly, young children, and people with underlying medical conditions. Dehydration may cause an imbalance in your body’s water and electrolyte levels.
To stay safe and hydrated, make water your festive drink of choice. Drinking plenty of water throughout the day is crucial to help your body regulate its temperature and maintain proper bodily functions. Aim to drink at least 8-10 glasses of water per day.
Protecting children from the sun is also vital. Apply a broad-spectrum sunscreen with a Sun Protection Factor (SPF) of at least 30 on children before they go outside. Reapply every two hours or immediately after swimming or sweating. Limiting children’s exposure to the sun is also essential, especially during peak hours (10 am-4 pm). Encourage them to play in the shade or indoors.
Watch for signs of dehydration, such as headaches, fatigue, dry mouth, and dark-colored urine. If you experience any of these symptoms, seek medical attention immediately.
stay safe and enjoy your festive season, happy days!
